Q: Is the Hummer H3 the best off-road vehicle that $30,000 can buy? Or would it be a used Land Cruiser?
If you were to spend no more than 30 grand and wanted a real off-roader, what would you get? Would you buy a Jeep? A Nissan Pathfinder/Frontier? A low milage, used, Toyota Land Cruiser (one of the best off-roaders in the last 50 years). Or, would you just buy a brand new Hummer H3 or the all new H3T?

A: Wrangler. Its cheap, simple, and has an after market that can provide an endless source of parts geared towards anything you would ever want to do off road. Its also smaller than everything you listed there which means it can go places they wont.

The H3 (although its just a modified Chevy Colorado) is actually pretty good off road too. Just don’t try the underpowered I5.

Q: 1993 land cruiser used senor safe cleaner for maf senors and still having problems?
i cleaned the maf with a sensor safe cleaner and now the check engine light is on and it shas no high end power . i disconnected the battery to rest the ecu but light is till on .

A: Are you sure that this is the problem…The maf sensor may be bad…You should have it scanned again to make sure this is the problem with your fj80..

Q: I have just bought a used Toyota Land Cruiser, Does any one have one that can answer some questions for me?
It is a 1996 Limited Edition All wheel drive.
The driverside floor is soaked !! Then when I pulled up to a store & stoped I could hear Water sloshingunder the floor. How did it get there & how can I get it out ? OH & there is a very low pitch buzzing even when its not on.Any Ideas?

A: There are a few problems with water collecting in the bodies of these trucks. The sunroof water collector drains through the body. Also, if there are any leaks near the c-pillar, rear quarter windows, or roof rack, the water ends up there. There are little plugs in the rocker panels that are supposed to let water through but they get plugged up.

The low-pitched buzzing is a different issue, either search ih8mud.com or ask another question, with some details about where the sound is coming from, if it does so with the key on/off/acc, etc.

Q: How many miles do Toyota Land Cruisers usually run without serious problems?
I want to buy a used Land Cruiser, and have seen mileage numbers ranging from the 100s to 200s. My question is to find out how many miles a Toyota Land Cruiser(preferably from 1990 to 1995) will run before encountering serious problems.

Plus, how many miles per gallon do the old land cruisers get?

A: Do yourself a favor. Buy a real SUV. get a Tahoe!

Q: does anyone know how expensive land rovers are to maintain?
i plan to buy a used land cruiser (but also like land rovers) i know toyotas are great for durability and cheap on maintenance but know nothing about land rover (discovery)

A: Land Rovers are decent cars but they are pretty expensive to maintain, especially when they have a higher mileage. They are also harder to get service for since they are foreign (UK). I think that the Land Cruiser is better in quality than a Land Rover. I would go for a newer land cruiser or even one of those new Toyota FJ Cruisers ($23,000 new). If you get a newer car you will probably save alot of money on maintenance.

Q: Can I disable the horn feedback I get when locking and unlocking my 94 Toyota Land Cruiser?
I have a 95 Toyota Land Cruiser that honks (beeps) everytime I use the keyless remote. Other cars I’ve had provided different types of “feedback” when locking the vehicle that you could choose, such as the lights flashing or nothing at all. Does the this model toyota land cruiser have a similar option and how do engage it so that the horn stops honking everytime I hit a button to unlock it?

A: This is just the type of alarm that was installed on your 80 series…You can go to a alarm shop and they will fix the problem…The easy way is to just pull the wire to the horn and use the finger when you get discouraged from another driver…

Q: Is a 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser better than a 2006 Toyota Avalon?
Im looking into buying a 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser with 129k miles or a 2006 Toyota Avalon with 65k miles. I like the Land Cruiser better because its for off road use and was built in Japan, buts its 7 years older with 2x the amount of miles. Please help.
I heard that the 2006 & 2006 Avalons were recalled at the start for U-body welds and oil lines.

A: They are both in different categories. Luxury wise, they’re about the same.

It all comes down to whether you want a SUV or sedan. Pretty much all the factors are equal like 4 doors, brand, comfort, etc.

I personally like the Land Cruiser more. Those are amazingly built cars.

Q: Off roading in my toyota… If I get a small lift kit then how does it effect my land cruiser for general use?
Any good kit recommendations?

A: ive always have had 4×4 trucks and jeeps, one thing for sure(dont let a shadetree mechanic lift it)a body lift is cheapest…suspension cost more but is the best, dont be cheap..it means alot to your ride…………

Q: What is the best tarp, etc. to use for storing luggage on a Land Cruiser rooftop?

A: If I were to buy a tarp. I would spend the extra money for a canvas tarp. They last as long as 10 of those crappy nylon or plastic tarps. Plus they are easier to fold up when you don’t need to use them.

Q: Whats a better car 4 offroad in the $30K range, used range rvr/land crsr, or new Xterra offroad? Or a/t else?
I have 30K to buy a car for offroading specifically, that can be used as a family car as well. I know these are supposed to be better cars than the Xterra, but is a used range rvr or land cruiser still better than a brand new Xterra? Or is there any other vehicle that is better for offroading, such as the Suzuki Vitar for 20K, and adding 5K to make it better? Any suggestions welcome.

A: I’ve been in the automotive business for 15 year but only in the last 2 years have I been working around Rovers, I used to think they were good cars… oops. Not so much, in my opinion they are one of the worst vehicles I ever had the displeasure of working on. I left that job cause I was tired of telling people that there $70,000 vehicle blew the engine at 60,000 miles even though they were meticulous with there maintenance. Fun to drive for a few years then they fall apart, not small stuff either, catastrophic failures, expensive failures. I would not feel safe letting my wife and kids drive one across the country. The Xterra is by far more reliable and less expensive to fix if it does break than the Rover. A Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX is a great vehicle, I like it better than the Xterra they are very reliable, rarely break, built like a tank but because they are built so well also expensive to repair if it does go down. I have seen Toyota Land Cruisers with over 700,000 miles with most of the original parts intact, factory Engine with no catastrophic failures, truly amazing vehicle. I have performed maintenance on a lot of the and fixed few. A 4runner/Surf or Lexus GX would be the happy medium between Xterra and Land Cruiser.

Q: I need information about conversion of a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser to compressed natural gas. Anything…?
I have a 2000 Land Cruiser with the four wheel drive 4.7 Liter V8 with 187,000 miles. It uses way too much gas. I’d like to convert it to use compressed natural gas. How do I do this legally? If you can, give me a few links I can take a loot at.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

A: Well I did this with my land cruiser, 4.5 6cyl, and it was a complete disaster. performance is decreased substantially (of course because of CNG) and backfires resulting in engine cut off (restart engine while moving). I have a CNG station as well and have done CNG kit fitting as well. I fitted two regulators but still did not solve the problem. Had fitted alot of different electronic timing devices which did not help as well. I had two 60 litre (capacity equal to 60 water litres) tanks which emptied after 70-80kms. Other than you will either have to fit the cylinders inside at the back or under the car where the extra tyre is situated. Cylinders manufactured by good companies have weight equal to the capacity (like 60 litre = 60 kgs weight) and those not by good companies have more weight (like 60 litre = 65-70kgs). after fitting these you will have to put packing under your back suspension because the car will be lower from the back (because of the weight of cylinders) and look very bad. And if every thing goes good and you do not get any problems then the usage of gas can not be decreased because a 4.7l v8 will consume a lot of gas…

Q: Can you please tell the Pros & Cons of a Land Cruiser FJ40?
I’ve been wanting to buy a LC for a while now, but people keep on telling me that they’re too difficult to handle, stiff steering and such. Also, you can’t use them for every day errands, and that parts are hard to find and not worth money. Is this true ?

A: It really depends on what your own background and ambitions are. If you’re looking at a classic LC, it should be for its functionality rather than style/looks. The FJs were immensely capable off-road vehicles with distinct, recognizable styling. With the Jeep CJ-5/7, the FJ is still considered one of the premiere vehicles for off-roading today.

That said, the same things that make these classics so dependable and great off-road can make them a pain on the road. If you’re not familiar with driving a CJ of FJ, they can be more than you can handle on the road. Personally, I’ve had three CJs, one of which I drive and am selling for on-road use today. The most important factor if you’re looking at finding one for on-road, everyday use is the suspension. Any CJ or FJ can be customized easily to meet the needs of the driver. Simply putting a coil-over type suspension on either vehicle can work wonders. If you take the vehicle to on off-road specialist, or a noted suspension shop, they should have no problem setting up a spring/shock set-up that makes the vehicle handle much better and more easily on the road. Similarly, the steering and braking units may need work. Both are substantially improved by adding power-assist systems, which can be installed by virtually any knowledgeable mechanic.

In short, my advice would be to consider why you like the FJ and what you would really be using it for. If you have the money, you can certainly find and customize one that fits your criteria. I should note that, generally speaking, a CJ7 would probably meet the same requirements while being easier to find and maintain, generally at a much lower cost. Good luck.

Q: need advice on which suv/muv/psuedo-suv i should buy, used, good safety rating, low # of repairs, 2wd fine?
Don’ t need a 4×4 anymore, but can’t stand not being up high on the road after 20 years of driving in tall vehicles. Have a minivan :-( , too long, want to be able to make easy u-turns. Will not be off-roading – just need street vehicle with great visibility. Jeep Wrangler ideal but in this area used prices too high and they don’t have a high enough safety rating for me. Looking at Kia Sportage, Nisaan Xterra, Toyota Rav4 or Highlander, Honda CRV, Hyundai Tucson, Chevy Tracker. Need high gas mileage, side airbags, ABS, 2wd preferred, can’t afford a lot of repairs down the line. Anyone got advise? I sure appreciate it. Any models to consider not on my list? Must be under $15,000 used (Land Cruisers etc out of the budget!). Thanks all!!
Forgot to mention: no big family, just husband and dog, have never used more than front seats in any vehicle I’ve owned. Will NOT consider buying a car/any model that doesn’t allow me to sit up high so please don’t recommend a Civic or Camry or VW, etc, it’s just a waste of time.

A: all depends on what u need an suv for. do you have a family???if yes then at 16,000 you can get a honda crv you cant go wrong 20 mpg high crash safety ratings and reliability. plus you can get a honda certified vehicle which has warranty packages and all. but if its just for you then i would skip the whole suv thing save some money on gas and get a hondacivic coupe 03 04 at that pricerange which will give you 23 mpg city and 31 highway plus dont worry bout u turns honda certified once again will get warranty on powertrain and all. i own two honda certified vehicles an suv buick rendevous 03 and honda civic coupe 04 the warranties saved us on alternators and starters.

Q: How to start land cruiser, model 2009 when the battery is low?
I HAVE A TROUBLE REGARDING HOW TO CHARGE LAND CRUISER 2009.AT FIRST THE CAR WAS WORKING WELL.LATER WHEN THE BATTERY WENT LOW ,I USED A BOOSTER CHARGER.I CONNECTED THE CHARGERS POSITIVE CABLE AND NEGATIVE CABLE TO THE RESPECTIVE TERMINALS OF THE BATTERY.THE PUSH BUTTON IN THE CAR SHOWED GREEN LIGHT.WHEN I PUSHED THE BUTTON ,THE ENGINE DIDNOT START ROTATING.

A: It could be a starter issue.

Take it to a Mechanic and have them look at it.

Or take out the Battery and have it checked/charged at your local Auto Parts Store.

Q: 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser Auto to 5 speed conversion?
Just wondering from the experts, what are the pro/cons of converting my automatic tranny to 5 speed. The price i have been quoted is almost $6 grand so it is not cheap but could you tell me about performance and MPG (if that matters in this vehicle)?

I use the vehicle in town and on highway, the offroading is for offroading/camping/fishing not for competitions or just showing off.

Thanks for your opinions and web links to mechanics/repair shops… much appreciated.

GL

A: $6 grand for a shop to convert it is probably about right. It’s a lot of work and parts. And why not just sell your auto and buy a stick shift one. The $6 grand you don’t spend on the conversion can be put towards buying a newer model with stick shift or upgrading whatever you buy.

You’re not going to notice enough (if any) mpg or performance improvements to make spending that much money worth it. And if you’re not a hardcore offroader, why do the conversion in the first place? The auto is much easier to drive on the road and off road.

I’ve done the conversion on a couple of Jeeps for my customers, and they regretted spending the money in the long run. Everyone thinks they want a stick because they think it’s so much better until they have to put up with driving it everyday. I say keep the auto.
